Best Children’s Books for 9-12-Year Olds
Here are some brilliant reads that I feel suit thoughtful, curious readers, and anyone who enjoys getting lost in other worlds.
For fantasy lovers:
Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell
An imaginative adventure bursting with magical creatures like griffins and dragons in an incredible, fantastical world (reminiscent of Narnia, but as islands!). It’s magical, dangerous and full of wonder.
For nature lovers:
October, October by Katya Balen
A tender, poetic story about a sensitive girl who has grown up in the woods and then has to face a big change – moving to London. It explores belonging, identity and the wonderful magic of nature. The best part about this book is the incredible writing style.
For fans of boarding school books:
Crookhaven by
J. J. Arcanjo
Imagine a secret school where children learn the art of (ethical!) mischief, faking and thievery. It’s fast, clever and full of twists and has the best gang of characters! Hogwarts but with thieves and without magic.
For sensitive children who want to learn about different experiences and cultures:
Front Desk by Kelly Yang
A powerful story about a Chinese-American girl (who loves writing). She helps her parents, who work in a motel, where they face unfair treatment as immigrants. It’s honest, warm and full of heart, but at the same time funny and smart.
For readers of funny books:
Cruise Ship Kid by Emma Swan
A fun, adventurous story set on a cruise ship, with friendship, discovery and a dash of mystery. Silver’s voice is so funny – she speaks directly to the reader, asks them lots of questions, and there are quizzes to fill out throughout the book! Excellent illustrations on most pages, too!
